Kneafsey is the solo project of Jimmy Drenovsky, who’s
been the frontman of Chicago’s Motel Breakfast since 2016
but is now stepping out with a project all his own. Jimmy has been writing music for most of his
life – he’s a dedicated student of songwriting who’s constantly processing and observing the
world around him. His debut album as Kneafsey is a carefully constructed batch of songs,
written throughout his 20’s and recorded patiently over three years to tape by Jimmy and
producer Will Hansen (of Milwaukee’s “Old Pup”).
After Jimmy and Will completed the tracking, they brought in Ziyad Asrar (of Chicago band
Whitney) to complete the mix and Ian Farmer (of Philly legends Modern Baseball and Slaughter
Beach, Dog) to master.
The resulting album, Sad Boy Blues, is an introduction that invites the listener into private
conversations and gut-wrenching meditations on love, loss, and friendship. It’s inviting,
vulnerable, earnest, and contains a surprising self-awareness, closing with levity by way of the
title track, and hinting at a sense of humor influenced by the likes of John Prine and Adrianne
Lenker.
